What’s going on with the COD?
May 2009
This month we held the GSA whitewater rafting trip with Outdoor Adventures. It was a very successful trip. About a dozen grads conquered the South Fork of the American River in inflated rubber boats. Now we are concentrating on gathering volunteers for the Special Olympics of Northern California Summer games coming up on campus in late June. Click over to the Special Olympics page to learn more.
April 2009
This month we began work on two final projects for the year. The rafting trip with Outdoor Adventures will by May 30. See the Spring Rafting page for all the details on that. Also we're putting together a volunteer group to work at the Special Olympics of Northern California's Summer Games. The games are going to be held on campus from June 26-28. See the Special Olympics page to learn how to join the grad community in helping out.
March 2009
The Ski Trip went very well. A total of 45 grads and significant others braved the threat of a winter storm to hit the slopes. Our bus got us out there in time to get a few hours of skiing in before the wet snow arrived. Many brave souls stayed on the hill even after the weather turned. Despite having to reschedule in February and having to put up with Heavenly's wildly unprofessional business practices, the trip was a success. Looking back at all the hassle and the high cost to the GSA per attendee, both the Executive Council and the General Assembly favored doing away with the trip in future years. I'll be working on using that budget line to organize trips with Outdoor Adventures instead.
For those of you interested in the future of SmartSite, you may want to check out this
vision document by Michael Korcuska, the Executive Director for the Sakai Foundation (Sakai is the software that SmartSite is based upon). It discusses his vision for Sakai v3. Hopefully we'll see some of these changes in the next year or two.
February 2009
The GSA Ski Trip had to be delayed to the first day of March after a huge storm made travel to the Sierras too dangerous. We spent much of this month organizing and then reorganizing the trip.
January 2009
Now that the rainy season has come to Davis, demand for bike fenders seems to be up. I brought more over to the Bike Barn early this month. Bring your grad student ID over there and they will install GSA fenders for just five bucks.
December 2009
We are working on the 2009 GSA Ski Trip. Next month we'll have details about the costs, date, and location.
November 2008
It looks like the Bike Barn has burned through the first box of bike fenders. More have been delivered to them to keep them flowing to grad students.
October 2008
This October the GSA teamed up with the Yolo County Elections Office in order to bring a weeklong early voting station to the campus. From October 27th through 31st, county election officials and graduate student volunteers manned the early voting station at the MU. The event was a smashing success. Over two thousand Yolo voters cast ballots at the station.
Summer through September 2008
This September we completed a program set in motion by last year’s COD. Together with UCD Transportation and Parking Services, the GSA purchased several hundred bike fenders. The fenders are on sale at the Bike Barn. If you show the barn your graduate student ID, they will sell and install the fenders for just five dollars.
