OPEN LETTER, November 23, 2011, 3:50 pm Pacific Time

As the outgoing (2010-2011) UC Davis Graduate Student Association Chair, current ex-officio member of the GSA Executive Council, and protest organizer/participant/witness of the events of last Friday, November 18, 2011, I have decided, after much deliberation and weighing of facts, that I can no longer support our current Chancellor, Linda Katehi, and call on her, for the good of the University and indeed for the good of society, to resign.

Dear all,

All of my experience as a student government official and instincts are pointing to the very real possibility, and yes I do believe probability, that Katehi will resign. I believe that she will never be able to recover the trust of the university community due to the incredible depth of the injustice that took place. Pepper spray is not a harmless irritant. There have been many documented deaths caused by pepper spray over the years.

As I was grading calculus papers the other night, I began to daydream about being pepper sprayed. Then shortly thereafter when I was walking out of the Math Sciences building, I felt unsafe when I saw a man walking behind me and the thought crossed my mind that it could be a campus police officer. This experience convinced me that Katehi has got to go. We must "clean house" and start fresh in order to expel this horrible new dystopian ethos, or rather "anti-ethos," that has been introduced into the university community as a result of Katehi's poor judgment (or worse).

She said she accepts full responsibility and therefore she must resign. Please join me in calling for her immediate resignation. Doing so will not cause us to take our eyes off the larger picture. In fact, personnel issues such as the issue of who is chancellor and what are the qualifications to be chancellor are part of the larger picture. There is no practical or moral alternative at this point. She must resign as quickly as possible. Just the fact that she has not already resigned points to the fact of her incompetence to be in the position.
