The Linguistics Graduate Group focuses both on the systematic study of human language—how it's constructed, how it's understood, how it functions in society, how it's represented in the mind and brain—and the practical art of teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). Linguistics as a discipline has existed for thousands of years, but in its modern incarnation it is an interdisciplinary field, with influences from (and on) such diverse traditions as psychology, computer science, anthropology, sociology, neuroscience, foreign language study, philosophy, pedagogy, and even anatomy. The Linguistics Graduate Group reflects this diversity well, with professors in the Department of Linguistics as well as several other academic departments. The Graduate Group also serves the campus by administering the ESL program for both graduates and undergraduates, and will be hosting a regional TESOL conference in November.
