Health Insurance and Cowell Health Center
Most graduate students are automatically enrolled in the
Student Health Insurance Program (SHIP). Primary care is handled through the
Cowell Student Health Center. You may also
waive SHIP coverage if you have a comparable insurance plan. The waiver deadline for Fall 2008 is September 18, 2008.
Dependents of UCD students are no longer eligible for insurance through SHIP. There are some resources available
here. However, uninsured dependents can still receive health care directly from the Cowell Health Center for a fee. Dependent Insurance can be obtained through our membership in NAGPS, though this is a less attractive option if you already get free SHIP through a 50% appointment (total).
For more information on obtaining private insurance plans, see
eHealthInsurance.com (click on Student Health Insurance) and
studentresources.com.
Dental Insurance
SHIP includes a Dental spending plan, where graduate students receive up to a certain amount for dental care with Delta Dental. For 2005-2006, that amount is $750.
Optometry Benefits
SHIP includes a Vision Discount Program, You get an annual eye exam with a copay of $25, and $130 every other year for frames, lenses, and compact lenses.
Also, the Meredith W. Morgan University Eye Center at the UC Berkeley School of Optometry offers SHIP members a $21 discount on comprehensive eye exams and a $15 discount on prescriptions filled at the Eye Center's optical dispensary. The Center has clinics conveniently located in Minor Hall and the Tang Center.

Non-Emergency Services Over Break
Medical Services Over Winter Break
If you are outside the Davis area during the winter break and are in need of non-emergency medical services, please remember that you must obtain a referral from Student Health Services (SHS) BEFORE receiving off campus-medical services. SHIP claims will not be considered for payment without prior referral from SHS. To verify your SHIP eligibility and obtain a referral, call a SHIP coordinator at (530) 752-6055. If you must call after business hours, leave a detailed message so the SHIP Coordinator may return your call and provide you with a referral as soon as possible. For medical emergencies, go to an urgent care or emergency facility for treatment. Referral by SHS is not required for medical services received in an emergency facility.
