Legal Aid

The GSA maintains a lawyer on retainer to provide graduate students with legal services. Graduate students are eligible for a free 15 minute consultation with this lawyer. To set up your free consultation, please contact the GSA Office Coordinator who will provide you with more information.

• Family Law Facilitator The Family Law Facilitator provides assistance to persons without an attorney in the area of family law. The Family Law Facilitator can assist with the completion of legal forms and provide general legal information concerning child support and /or spousal support, establishment of paternity, dissolution (divorce), legal separation, and health insurance. Services are provided free of charge.

• The Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Center

• UCD Mediation Service They provide professional conflict management consultation, education and services to faculty, staff and graduate students. Our core service is structured, informal mediation designed to facilitate the effective management of workplace disputes. They can assist you with: Informally resolving (a) problem(s) with a colleague, supervisor or subordinate, Suggesting strategies for initiating discussions where tensions may exist , Addressing issues involving multiple parties with common concerns , Providing consultations ranging from specific issues involving colleagues or co-workers to a comprehensive approach to conflict management in your organization , Offering self-help resource library of conflict resolution books and materials available on a check out basis. Their services are Confidential - no information generated from your mediation is placed in any personnel or other administrative file; we do not share information unless all parties choose and agree to do so, Informal - our process is not an administrative process; however, it is structured in terms of what you can expect during mediation. , Voluntary - all parties must agree to participate in mediation and Free of charge - all services provided are free of charge to faculty, staff and graduate students
  

• ASUCD Legal Service Should you encounter an undergraduate student who needs legal assistance, please inform them that ASUCD contracts with an attorney to provide FREE legal advice to registered undergraduate students at UC Davis. For your free 15 minute consultation, please come into the ASUCD Student Services Office, Room 345 Memorial Union (3rd Floor) and bring your reg card. • UC Davis School of Law Clinics UC Davis School of Law has had a longstanding commitment to public service law. The school offers a certificate program in public service law and operates four legal clinics in which law students provide free representation for clients in immigration, civil rights, family protection and prison law. Nearly a quarter of UC Davis law school graduates go on to practice public service law.
  

• The Humanitarian Aid Legal Organization (HALO) is a group of law students dedicated to providing free legal aid to those individuals in need of legal assistance. Group members dedicate their time to fundraising and planning a trip to provide this service to those in need during spring break.
  

• Campus Violence Prevention Program Immediate, confidential and supportive response to survivors is a priority as is advocating for victims of violence with initial medical evaluation, legal and police procedures, and academic and housing issues. Confidential crisis intervention and advocacy is available to both recent survivors and those working to recover from a past incident. We also provide short term intervention and support for friends, family, housemates and co-workers of the survivor.
  

• Cross Cultural Center The Cross-Cultural Center (CCC) supports and advocates for the institutional goal of campus diversity. Our work fosters understanding of and appreciation for the cultures, traditions and histories reflected in the campus community, as well as social justice and therefore may be able to provide contacts for legal aid in discrimination issues.
  

• Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Resource Center The LGBT Resource Center provides a comprehensive range of education, information and advocacy services and works to create and maintain an open, safe and inclusive environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students, staff, faculty, their family and friends and the entire campus community. The Center can also serve as a meeting space for local organizations or support groups. Their focus is respect, pride and unity with regard to all individuals.
  

• Services for International Students and Scholars (SISS) Services for International Students and Scholars assists international students, faculty and researchers in gaining and maintaining an appropriate immigration status while at UC Davis. SISS provides orientation and other information and assistance as part of its mission to build a campus community that is fully inclusive of international students and scholars. All new and transfer international students must attend a special orientation program held just before each quarter begins. The orientation helps new students with immigration regulations and finding campus services and community resources, and is a vital addition to campus and departmental orientation programs. Orientation for new J-1 international scholars is held each week; this would be an excellent sournce to contact regarding student/work visa issues.
  

• Women’s Resources and Research Center (WRRC) The Women’s Resources and Research Center (WRRC) educates the campus community about women’s issues and concerns, promotes an understanding of the role and impact of gender in our lives and in our society, helps women of diverse backgrounds achieve their intellectual, professional, and personal goals, and advocates for women’s full inclusion, equality and advancement. The WRRC’s staff can answer questions, locate resources and help you with personal, academic or work-related concerns. Services and resources include lectures, workshops and forums; a library staffed by a full-time librarian; resource listings of campus and community services such as health care, counseling, child care, women’s organizations and legal resources; child emergency notification service for student parents; and specialized programs, discussion groups and individualized consultation for faculty and graduate students on research, academic, career and personal topics.

• Legal Aid List The organizations listed for California provide free legal assistance to eligible clients or state support to legal services programs. Most of the organizations are grantees of the Legal Services Corporation and subject to restrictions on the kinds of cases they may bring and clients they may represent.
  

• Volunteer Legal Service Program VLSP is a volunteer-based “pro bono” legal aid program that provides free assistance with civil legal matters to low income clients living in the Sacramento region. Serving Sacramento, Yolo, San Joaquin, El Dorado and Placer Counties.
  

• Department of Consumer Affairs Provides information about Legal aid societies that provide free legal advice, representation, and other legal services in noncriminal cases to the economically disadvantaged. The societies are located in most major metropolitan areas throughout the state. The Community Services Administration provides funding for legal aid. Revenue sharing and private subsidies provide additional funding. The National Legal Services Corporation administers legal aid.
