Graduate Student use of Unitrans
History of Unitrans use by graduate students
Currently $28.50 per quarter is paid by each undergraduate for the Unitrans busing system. The exact amount it would cost the GSA to buy
into this program is open to negotiations involving the ASUCD leadership along with the GSA and Unitrans. This subject seems to come
up about every two years, so if has been discussed fairly often (since 1990 when the undergraduate fee was established). It was voted in the
June 2004 GSA Assembly meeting that instead of buying into a program that is not used by all graduate students we would make information
about discounted use of Unitrans and other transportation programs available to graduate students.

Graduate Student Use of Campus Parking
According to University of California Office of the President, parking on campus is supposed to be a self-supporting entity. This means that TAPS will continue to require a permit for parking in all spaces during enforcement hours, with no exceptions (enforcement hours are usually Monday through Friday, 7 AM to 10 PM). The GSA has argued to TAPS, and to the administration, that graduate students present a unique situation when it comes to parking; for example, we are more likely to only need to park on campus a few days out of the week or need to park only at night. This situation has become even more worrisome since many students don't feel safe parking far away from campus at night.
As long as TAPS needs to make money to pay its officers and to pay for more parking structures, graduate students will not get any special deals on parking. Furthermore, trying to use common sense to explain a parking citation will not get you very far. The GSA recommends always purchasing a permit when parking on campus and to bring any complaints or requests directly to the
TAPS office.
