CHOICES IN THE HEAT OF THE MOMENT
OCTOBER 19, 2016
11:30 am – 1:00 pm
OCTOBER 25, 2016
3:00 PM – 4:30 PM
Student Community Center, Meeting Room D
Join us for this 90 minute workshop designed to help participants consider the choices of how to respond to a comment, look, or action that triggers anger, hurt, or offense. It can be very hard to realize our choices at such a moment because the powerful “fight or flight” response in the brain is triggered. Learn how to recognize this reaction, understand the range of options, and consider the consequences of those options, before you find yourself in the midst of such an event.
Each workshop is limited to 25 participants to provide an opportunity for attendees to practice skills that help us make a choice on how we respond, not just react.

2016 Fall Convocation Theme ‘Inspiring Dialogue and Community’ Events
Presented by Campus Dialogue & Deliberation
WELCOME TO THE GRADUATE TEACHING COMMUNITY!
The aim of this group is to provide a space for graduate students and post-docs on the UC Davis campus to feel supported in their efforts to become better teachers. This is a place to discuss learning and teaching philosophy and practice. We meet with the purpose of creating opportunities for collaborative interdisciplinary professional development in a community of practice.
WHY THE GTC?
- Do you want to know what the research on learning shows? To discuss implementation of instruction and high impact strategies that lead to better learning outcomes?
- Do you want to equip yourself with the language and skills of sound learner-centered, research-based pedagogy?
- Do you want to add certificates of participation to your CV — to provide talking points in potential interviews that may differentiate you from similarly situated candidates in the job market?
- Do you want to collaborate with graduate students outside of your home departments and/or learning groups?
If you answer “yes” to any (or all) of these questions…our Graduate Teaching Community is an opportunity for you.
Weekly Meeting Time: Wednesdays, 12:10-1:00 (snacks provided)
1st Meeting: Wednesday, October 5
Location: Surge 3 (The Grove), Room 1360

Thanks to all of you who attended last night’s town hall. If you missed it, you can view the recording here. In addition, your graduate student rep, Brian Riley (firstname.lastname@example.org) has invited you to provide input to him directly.
Today, I was among a small group of students who had the opportunity to speak to the search advisory committee today. I am voluntarily releasing the statement that I made to that group on behalf of graduate students. In the statement, I asked the committee to increase transparency surrounding their procedures. UC President Janet Napolitano described this procedure to us, and assured us that this description would be made publicly available. In my statements, I also made asks regarding the committee’s engagement with students through public forums and assurance that student input would be taken seriously. I await the committee’s response to these asks.
I plan to continue doing what I can to promote student input in this process.
