1. URGENT: Call to assist Puerto Rican graduate students
As you know, Puerto Rico is experiencing an unfolding disaster in the wake of Hurricane Maria. The University of Puerto Rico (UPR) is closed for the current semester and an opening date is speculative at best. Due to the magnitude of the disaster, the University is trying to offer support to Puerto Rican graduate students and faculty who can benefit from visiting UC Davis as scholars.
We are contacting you to ask about your ability to support graduate students for a limited period, in order to help them sustain their scholarship until UPR can reopen. It is expected that UPR students and faculty will need assistance over the 2017-2018 academic year, and we are asking if you can house a fellow graduate student on a volunteer or visitor status for a period of at least one quarter.
At present, campus administrators are trying to get a good estimate of interest from UPR, but speculation is about 20 students would take us up on our offer.
If you can assist, please respond to the google form provided here. You will be asked for identification information as well what types of assistance you might be able to provide. Please respond by Monday, October 9th at 4:00pm.
2. Annual Disability Awareness Symposium & Accessibility Technology Fair
On behalf of the Chancellor’s Disability Issues Administrative Advisory Committee (DIAAC), we invite you to attend our Annual Disability Awareness Symposium & Accessibility Technology Fair on October 11, 2017, 11:00a.m. to 2:00p.m., at the Student Community Center, Multipurpose Room. The topic for the Symposium is “Anxiety: When Striving Keeps You from Thriving,” and the presenter is Dr. Emilio Licea, a psychologist at Student Health.
3. Student Parent Child-Care Funding Program
Student Parent Child Care Funding Program applications are available for the 2017-18 Academic Year. The Graduate Student Child Care Grant (GSCCG) Program provides a $900 per quarter/$1350 per semester payment to full-time graduate and professional students with children, regardless of financial need. The program is designed to offset costs incurred in child care services. Please note, the GSCCG can be supplemented with additional funds from the CBCG program for those students who demonstrate financial need. Please visit the website for more information, fact sheets, deadlines and applications. http://worklife-wellness.ucdavis.edu/family_care/children/childcaresub.html.
