GSA Legislative Affairs Newsletter – March/April 2025 Edition  The March/April edition of the GSA Legislative Affairs Newsletter is here! This issue spotlights major updates affecting graduate students at UC Davis - from Gov. Newsom’s 7.95% UC budget cut and federal NIH funding threats to new housing and anti-discrimination bills introduced in the state legislature.

DEI Initiatives Remain Lawful Under the New Executive Administration

The J21 EO demeans “diversity, equity, and inclusion” initiatives and tracks the Trump administration’s broader desire to eliminate public and private efforts to counter various forms of exclusion, bias and bigotry that permeate American society. Federally funded institutions should not, however, interpret the J21 EO and related communications as requiring the elimination or curtailment of existing DEI initiatives.

What to do if a Federal Immigration Agent Contacts You

  1. Inform the agent that you are not obstructing their process and need to consult with campus counsel because you are not authorized to give consent to access persons or non-public areas of buildings.
  2. Call Campus Counsel at (530) 754-7111.
  3. Call UC Davis Police Department (530) 752-1727.
  4. Ask for the agent’s name, ID number, agency affiliation, and business card.
  5. Ask to take a photo of the warrant or subpoena so you can provide it to campus counsel.

General Assembly Passed Resolution 12/6

On December 6th, UC Davis GSA passed a resolution affirming our commitment to supporting all UCD graduate students and condemning the failure of Chancellor May to acknowledge the ongoing violence experienced by people in Palestine. This resolution is an expansive call to examine our complicity as institutional actors within a public university and to take concrete steps towards ending said complicity.
